Dr. Raja Asks, "Why Are You Settling On Dentures?"

Traditional Dentures
vs. Full Mouth Dental Implants

Although conventional dentures are made to fit snugly on top of your gums based on impressions taken of your jaw, they have their own set of drawbacks. The alveolar bone that held your teeth in place is highly prone to shrinking and resorbing. Without tooth roots stimulating and keeping the underlying bone healthy, dentures can loosen, slip, fall out, and cause gum irritation, resulting in facial collapse and the need for periodic relining.

Other common complaints include messy adhesives, food limitations, and difficulty chewing. Whether you choose fixed or removable implant retained dentures, you’ll never have to worry again about these issues. At Smile Design Centre, we offer implant-retained dentures, Snap-On dentures, and full-arch dental implants crafted from durable, natural-looking zirconia. Full-mouth dental implants in Hagerstown, MD protect your underlying bone and provide the ability to eat, speak and live confidently!

Step Two: Precise Dental Implant Placement

To ensure your complete comfort, we offer nitrous oxide and anxiolysis in addition to numbing your gums with a local anesthetic. During our full-mouth dental implants procedure, Dr. Raja places a minimum of four Neodent® dental implants per arch in areas of your jaw with the greatest bone density. While this protocol requires fewer implants, it offers exceptional flexibility because it can be modified with all-on four to six protocols in patients who require additional implants per arch. Tilting the posterior (back) dental implants at a 45-degree angle typically prevents the need for bone grafting, although a small number of patients may require a bone grafting procedure. The anterior (front) implants can be placed vertically because bone loss is less common in front teeth. You’ll walk out of our practice with temporary teeth that look and feel natural.

Step Three: Recovery

We’ll provide you with postsurgical instructions and tips to aid in the healing process. The first week after dental implant surgery, you may be advised to only eat soft foods and a liquid diet. To prevent damage to your implants, irritation to the implant sites, and potential infection, you need to avoid certain foods until your sites have fully healed and the implants have integrated with the underlying bone. It typically takes three to six months for the implant sites to heal and dental implants to integrate with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. After dental implants fuse with your underlying bone, they replicate the function of natural tooth roots, providing a secure and permanent foundation for new fixed or removable teeth.

Step Four: Final Smile

The final stage of the process is fitting you with a customized full-mouth restoration created from beautiful and durable zirconia that looks and feels so natural that nobody, but you and our team will know these aren’t your natural teeth! If you’ve opted for a temporary solution, the prosthesis is typically crafted from high-quality acrylic resin. At-home and professional oral hygiene for fixed full-mouth dental implants are the same as natural teeth.
